As one of the most potent skin-regeneration actives, copper peptides continue to catch our eye as we peruse the ingredients lists of our favourite serums.
Thanks to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and healing benefits, copper peptides address some of the main causes of premature ageing. As a reparative and anti-ageing ingredient, they keep the skin in a constant state of repair, making sure the processes that produce collagen, reduce inflammation and heal skin are working well.
It is all about the skin’s ability to repair itself and getting it to behave in a younger way. It addresses all aspects of skin ageing; from firmness, to pigmentation, hydration and elasticity – all because the skin simply acts like its younger self.
Copper peptides have unique properties that clearly deliver multiple anti-ageing benefits, thanks to the copper’s inherent characteristics. The main benefits are:
- Stimulates collagen and elastin production. Maintains the strength of the skin and therefore helps to tighten and firm skin. The more collagen the skin makes, the less likely it is to sag and wrinkle.
- Antioxidant function. Neutralises the damaging free radicals in the skin and prevents wrinkles.
- Anti-inflammatory responses. Reduces skin irritations and inflammation, which is thought to be one of the main causes of premature ageing.
Additional benefits of copper peptides for the skin are:
- Great for skin healing, especially after surgery. For instance, copper peptides are often recommended after non-invasive skin procedures such as laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, chemical peels and micro-needling procedures.
- Helps wounds to heal faster post-breakout
- Removes damaged collagen and elastin from the skin and scar tissue, to then stimulate healthy collagen and elastin for wound healing.
- Makes skin more resistant to redness and irritations.
- Helps prevent infections, thanks to its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
- Stimulates the creation of glycosaminoglycans (such as hyaluronic acid) that retains moisture in the skin’s inner cells.
- Produces enzymes that are essential for skin’s health, including antioxidant superoxide dismutase and lysyl oxidase.
Copper-infused ingredients should be an important part of anyone’s anti-ageing regimen because it works to maintain the skin’s overall youthful condition.
NIOD’s original Copper Amino Isolate Serum (CAIS) is one of my favourite skincare products of all time. I was therefore delighted to get my hands on the brand new Copper Amino Isolate Lipid (CAIL) 1%.
An enhanced approach to achieving overall healthy-looking skin, this pro-collagen, pro-lipid, pro-fat formula has all the benefits of NIOD’s multi-award-winning Copper Amino Isolate Serum, with the additional benefits of building and enhancing the skin barrier function, elasticity and integrity.
NIOD’s Copper Amino Isolate Lipid (CAIL) 1% uses a potent copper peptide molecule, a unique patented complex and a long list of vitamins, amino acids and minerals, with a strong focus on improving elasticity, volume and resilience by elevating the skin to optimal conditions.
CAIL 1% is composed of several amazing actives and technologies, including:
Tripeptide-1 (Palmitoyl) Copper: The formula incorporates a solubilised format of pure Palmitoyl-GHK-Cu at a 1% concentration. This peptide works synergistically to restore and maintain a youthful appearance of the skin. GHK-Cu allows the activation of a wide range of skin health functions, including healing, immune function, collagen synthesis, fibroblast production and anti-inflammatory responses.
Zizanoic Vetiver: A unique upcycled ingredient, derived from the roots of vetiver exhausted by the fragrance industry, Zizanoic Vetiver has properties to support skin tonicity, volume and firmness. Zizanoic Vetiver promotes the improved appearance of skin volume redefinition and firmness while promoting an overall plumping effect.
Patented Dihydrodiisoeugenol Complex: With ageing, the distribution of fat tissue changes due to the inhibition of adipogenesis and increased fat degradation via stimulated lipolysis. Patented Dihydrodiisoeugenol Complex is a novel, multi-faceted approach to enhancing skin resilience using a dual mode of action to approach the decline in subcutaneous fat. This unique complex aims to counteract the appearance of a decrease in adipose tissue by improving the elasticity and firmness of the skin, particularly when applied to the cheeks and jawline.
Aphanizomenon Aquaflo: A newly discovered blue-green algae that is rich in vitamins, amino acids and minerals to promote the replenishment of the superficial protective barrier of the stratum corneum. It smooths the skin surface for a younger appearance by facilitating the skin’s natural moisturising factors. Prominent in Proline and Lysine, Aphanizomenon Aquaflo improves skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.
Plant-derived Squalane: A vegetable hydrocarbon renowned for its emollience and capacity to maintain skin’s moisture barrier, squalane is an excellent hydrator that can replenish hydration, imparting suppleness and flexibility to the skin.
Suitable for all skin types, CAIL 1% should be applied to the face, or face and neck, in the evenings. It can be used alone or follow it with MMHC from NIOD (one of the best Hyaluronic Acid serums ever), and also a moisturiser, should one wish.
CAIL 1% should not be used within the same routine as products containing strong acids, antioxidants, pure vitamin C, retinoids or retinals.
The formula’s blue comes purely from the copper peptides. NIOD uses a high concentration to give it its natural colour. It is easy to apply and has great spreadability. The formula has a wonderful balmy gel-to-oil texture that melts effortlessly into the skin.
I have been using NIOD’s CAIL 1% since its launch in October 2019. Frankly, it was love at the first application. It has drastically improved the quality of my skin. It has balanced my skin, giving it a toned and even look. Also, my skin appears firmer and more defined. Having said that, you may also want to read my article about NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Serum 2:1 which is another NIOD product that is absolutely worth trying.
The addition of squalane within this new formula means it has excellent moisturising benefits and therefore works very well with my current routine that includes retinol on alternating nights.
With CAIL 1%, Deciem and NIOD have shown again why they are one of the world’s leading skincare innovators, focusing on cutting-edge ingredients and new technologies whilst pushing the limits of skincare science.
