A luxury design hotel in Madrid

Art, elegance & gastronomy

Hotel Urban Madrid exudes timeless luxury with an avant-garde flair and a touch of glamour

In the heart of the city centre, Hotel Urban Madrid invites guests into a world of avant-garde design, art and gastronomy behind a striking steel and glass facade. Classically modern Art Deco interiors and eclectic indigenous works of art coalesce brilliantly to produce a privileged environment of everlasting beauty. Here every space is authentically unique.

From the glamorous rooftop terrace and the gorgeous onsite art museum, to the fine dining under the leadership of two of Spain’s leading chefs and the great staff, Hotel Urban is emblematic of the city’s timeless elegance and cosmopolitan modernity. The luxury hotel has 96 rooms and suites, where the chic industrial design that employs plenty of steel, glass and leather acts as a backdrop for an impressive collection of original artworks from Papua New Guinea and the Hinduist culture.

Enjoying a prime downtown location near the historic centre, this luxury Madrid hotel is situated near renowned museums, next to the trendiest restaurants and vibrant nightlife, as well as the city´s finest shopping district.

A visually pleasing fusion of Art Deco, modernity, luxury and an ethnic flair is seamlessly blended into an aesthetic and timeless elegance

Making a statement, Hotel Urban Madrid provides a striking contrast to the surrounding emblematic neighbourhood’s classic aesthetic.

With its commanding painted steel, black stone and glass facade, the design hotel stands out with understated elegance, whilst exuding an imposing presence and quiet grandeur.

Serving as a prelude to the tastefully designed interiors, the large double-height portico opens into a circular atrium that houses the lobby and reception area and offers a unique structural boldness.

Hotel interiors

The hotel oozes panache, flair and style in every way. Classy, dramatic and welcoming, the highly polished yet art-inspired interior starts with the breathtaking totems from Papua New Guinea in the lobby and extends to the modernist style found throughout the rooms. A gold statue of a scuba diver-cum-soldier is perched on the rooftop and a playful quirkiness to the hotel.

The incorporation of indigenous art throughout the hotel ensures visual and conceptual harmony, whilst the eclectic and austere Art Deco look adds a touch of glamour. The fine palette of warm colours and noble materials is beautifully contrasted by loads of chrome and glass. Soaring windows filter light throughout, whilst thin sheets of alabaster cast a gentle ambient glow.

Decorative features include the impressive steel and crystal pergola, the award-winning alabaster column of black stone from Zimbabwe, and the magnificent staircase lined with glittering gold mosaic that is the work of the same Italian artists commissioned to maintain St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

Art is present in every room and every corner of Hotel Urban Madrid: ceremonial sculptures from the end of the 19th century, brought from Papua New Guinea by an expedition of Catalan archaeologists and anthropologists during the 1930s, exist alongside Ming Dynasty prints, bas-reliefs and funerary pieces from pharaohs Ramesses II, Senkamanisken and Tahark. There are Khmer statuettes made of solid wood from the end of the 11th century, brought from the temples of Angkor, and Buddhist pieces from the Qin and Han Dynasties, founders of the Chinese Empire (221-207 BC).

A dazzling collection of works of art and an onsite museum

Art is omnipresent and stems from the passion of Jordi Clos, Chairman of the Derby Hotels Collection which includes Hotel Urban.

A stunning collection of Papua New Guinean, Chinese, Hindu, Buddhist and Khmer works of art of priceless artistic and historical value is on display in both the hotel’s onsite museum and in each of its rooms and public spaces.

Since its opening in 2004, Hotel Urban has been acquiring tribal pieces from Papua New Guinea and now boasts a major private collection consisting of around 200 pieces, of which 100 are permanently on show at the hotel.

The first works were bought for the Folch Foundation in Barcelona. Their owner, Albert Folch, obtained these pieces between 1964 and 1972 during trips to the country. Also part of this collection are some works that belonged to the explorer and renowned art collector, Jean Louis Roiseux, who made his first expedition to Papua New Guinea in 1963. The collection is completed by numerous acquisitions from auction houses around the world, as well as pieces acquired by Jordi Clos’s own trips to Papua New Guinea.

The collection consists of a number of carved totem poles from Tambaran houses, carved ritual drums, painted ceremonial shields, ceremonial chairs, yam masks, Yipwon, mindja, hook and ancestor figures as well as large vungvung masks.

Hotel Urban’s exquisite onsite museum is dedicated exclusively to Papua New Guinea art. It showcases a major collection of jewellery and ethnic costumes including necklaces, diadems, crowns and pectorals, as well as ritual objects such as knives, sorcerers’ bags and yam masks.

There is an important collection of Buddhist, Hindu, Chinese and Khmer art on display in all of the guest rooms. Particularly notable is a set of nine Hindu jade carvings of planets representing the nine incarnations of Vishnu, wooden Buddhist sculptures from the 15th to 18th centuries and colourful panels of Chinese painting depicting gatherings of noble families from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Accommodation, with museum-worthy artefacts, offers a gorgeous blend of convenience and elegant individuality

Adorned with exquisite décor, the hotel’s 96 rooms and suites incorporate Art Deco references that are fused with retro glamour and modern sensibilities.

The sobriety of the modern-classic style is further enhanced by the fine palette of brown, black and white hues that add a timeless touch to the rooms. The rooms and suites feature leather furniture, polished dark wood floors, careful lighting and shimmering fabrics. Centuries-old original sculptures and artefacts from Hindu cultures and southwest Pacific, which accent every room, give each elegant space a sophisticated individuality.

All rooms and suites feature luxe bathrooms, individual climate control, satellite television, minibar, safe that can fit a laptop, and a cosy robe.

There are five room categories: Loft Suite, Suite, Junior Suite, Junior Duplex Suite and Superior Room.

At almost 53m², the Loft Suite is Hotel Urban’s top category. Bathed in extraordinary natural light, the elegant suite is a luxurious loft-style duplex with a split-level layout. The bedroom is on the first floor and a sitting area is on the top floor. Guaranteed to wow, it is highlighted by the impressive 4-metre-plus window that commands beautiful views of the Carrera de San Jerónimo. Its timeless beauty is further enhanced by a balanced composition of finely crafted details and exquisite materials such as wenge wood, limestone, Guatemalan green marble, Zimbabwe black stone and tropical teakwood.

A culinary destination with Michelin-starred dining and a beautiful rooftop bar

Hotel Urban Madrid offers an inspirational selection of bars and upscale dining establishments tuned in to the city’s cosmopolitan vibe – the Glass Mar, the CEBO restaurant and La Terraza del Urban.

A gastronomic reference in Madrid, the one-Michelin-starred restaurant CEBO is synonymous with contemporary, progressive Spanish Mediterranean cuisine, with a perfect balance between avant-garde and tradition.

Restaurant CEBO

Chef Aurelio Morales, a rising star of molecular gastronomy who worked alongside culinary greats such as Ferran Adrià at El Bulli and Paco Perez at Miramar, fuses Madrilenian and Catalan cuisines with Mediterranean references to create culinary excellence. At the core of his success is an obsessive commitment to creativity, technical prowess and perfection.

With a constant reinvention that brings the past into the present and the present into the future, the menu is influenced by seasonality and quality produce. Underlying it all is a hint of multicultural concepts. In an evolutionary approach to timelessly modern haute cuisine, CEBO serves artistic dishes with inestimable flair.

Diners can choose amongst three tasting menus, with dazzling dishes that might include tiny quisquilla shrimp emerging from a spray of zingy citrus foam, wild turbot with lágrima peas and prawns, or nigiri with beef that has been aged for 180 days. The pre- and post-dinner cocktails are a work of art.

The meal is completed with very interesting wine and champagne pairings, chosen by sommelier Jacinto Domenech.

The elegant 25-seat dining room is timelessly chic, contemporary and stylish, and evokes a feeling of refined sobriety.

The Glass Mar is headed by Michelin-starred Chef Ángel León, whose passion is sea-inspired cuisine. The space is truly stunning, with soaring windows, a glowing alabaster wall, a blue marble bar, classy furniture and quirky details such as a giant whale skeleton that presides over the room.

For balmy summer nights, there is the gorgeous La Terraza del Urban, an outdoor space with mesmerising views of Madrid’s skyline. This popular nightspot offers an extensive cocktail menu and a delightful selection of tapas.

Breakfast at Hotel Urban is an elegant affair with friendly, attentive service. A tempting buffet features great juices, quality yogurts, Ibérico ham and artisanal cheeses. A real treat is the à la carte breakfast menu which could include eggs Benedict, omelettes and blinis with smoked salmon.

In the basement of the hotel sits the Hidden Cellar, which features personal selections from CEBO’s sommelier Jacinto Domenech. The space that became the Hidden Cellar was discovered and preserved during construction of the hotel. Now it stores more than 1,000 bottles, among them wines of great vintages and select spirits.

Deluxe amenities

The immense central atrium in the lobby, with funky Edra Flap chairs and a sofa, is a great place to linger. The soaring glass-and-chrome space is crowned by a huge skylight that illuminates its steel beams, giving the space a futuristic, industrial look.
