NIZUC Resort & Spa offers striking design that blissfully fuses Asian architectural forms, Mexican materials and Mayan iconography
Conceptualised by the talented Mexican architect and designer Alejandro Escudero, NIZUC is one of his greatest works.
Stunningly designed and masterly crafted, the overall concept was to create a harmonious space where the timeless and pared-back combine with natural and organic forms to convey a simple yet sophisticated design.
The spectacular design works brilliantly to frame one of NIZUC’s star attractions: the secluded enclave of the Punta Nizuc, which reveals lush foliage, skies ablaze in all colours of the fiery sun, and the white sands of the MesoAmerican Barrier Reef.
With a subtle modernist approach and a strong focus on materiality and context, contemporary lines and symmetric shapes warmed with natural openness and a sober design palette make for a successful motif for the property. The visual and tactile qualities of the clean, geometric forms, fine local materials and muted colours contribute to NIZUC’s understated style and dazzling beauty. Dramatic lighting gives the exterior stone walls a monumental look.
Drawing inspiration from the beauty of the native landscape with its stunning ocean, coastline and natural environment, the design also merges Asian influences and Mayan heritage, along with a touch of cosmopolitan flair. To instil the resort with Mexican spirit, Escudero worked closely with the Museo Nacional de Antropología to replicate Mayan hieroglyphs and placed them throughout the hotel. He also incorporated 17th-century stone doorframes and a mural inspired by a 16th-century fresco from the Convento Agustino in the city of Malinalco.
The hotel’s smartly presented aesthetic engages constantly with its awe-inspiring natural surroundings. Both layout and orientation are distributed in such a way that there is soft fluidity between spaces in which awe-inspiring views and natural light are optimised. The design and flow of the property leads to a natural seamless blend of the indoors and outdoors, bringing a casual luxury and comfort that creates moments of delight and moments of pause. Expansive floor-to-ceiling shutters allow for a spectacular transparency throughout. High ceilings and open airways create natural airflow, whilst framing the seemingly endless reflecting pools adorned with lush garden beds.
Complementing the soothing colour palette of earthy birch browns and cold stone greys, the unique design merges a wealth of beautiful organic materials, from local stones to ziricote, and pucte woods, evoking a naturally elegant look. Escudero also sourced a perfect mixture of stylish furnishings that embody luxurious rusticity and simple sophistication. Every evening the resort is magically illuminated and light plays on the reflection pools, evoking a sense of calm beauty and tranquillity. There are fire and water features everywhere, further enhancing the dramatic and soothing balance in the open spaces.
