GOTS-certified organic cotton, an internationally recognised seal of quality and sustainability
To produce waffle weave bath towels of the highest possible quality, The Organic Company needed to start by selecting the right raw materials for the towels range. It was important to use natural materials and high-quality organic cotton was chosen for the towels. Cotton is durable, absorbs moisture well and in higher qualities, it gives the skin an extraordinarily soft feel, making cotton well adapted for bath towels and using the right raw material makes all the difference.
However, not all cotton is created equal. Conventional cotton is one of the most unsustainable crops, with issues arising at almost every stage of the process — the genetically modified seeds (GMO) often used, the large quantities of water required, the pesticides and insecticides used in cotton farming, the harsh chemicals used in dyes, the toxic waste that pollutes rivers, and the discarded, chemically treated product that ends up in landfills. There are, however, alternatives that offer the benefits of being non-toxic, more environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and higher quality. The Global Organic Textile Standard – or GOTS Certified Organic Cotton – is one of these options. This is the type of cotton that The Organic Company uses.

Acquiring certification is no easy task. Focussing on every stage throughout the entire supply chain, GOTS-certified textiles, including GOTS cotton, must meet credentials such as containing at least 70% organic fibres, any chemicals used must meet stringent environmental requirements and fair work practices must be followed throughout supply chains.
GOTS-certification — the gold standard for organic cotton
The Organic Company products are made from 100% organic cotton; since 2010, all products have been 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton.
GOTS is considered the gold standard for certified organic cotton because of the stringent standards and protocols. The protocol and breadth of GOTS certification is awe-inspiring. Simply said, all other certifications fall short. Unlike other certifications, GOTS certification goes from seed, farming, processing and manufacturing to the finished product, including distribution and packaging.

Here are some key points on the criteria to meet the GOTS certification:
- Textile products carrying the GOTS label must contain a minimum of 70% certified organic fibres, while products with the label ‘organic’ must have a minimum of 95% certified organic fibres
- Organic fibres must be used. These are fibres that are produced without the aid of artificial insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
- Using practices, chemicals and additives that are damaging to the environment or human health are prohibited, including chlorine bleach; dyes that release carcinogenic amine compounds; toxic chemicals, heavy metals, mercury, parathion, benzidine, formaldehyde, and GMOs.
- Machine oil that comes into contact with organic textiles is free of heavy metals, and any accessories or trims used on garments are free of chemical residue
- Wastewater treatment and chemicals are strictly monitored
- Workers must be well treated, e.g. no forced or child labour; safe, humane and hygienic working conditions; regulated working hours; fair pay
- The certification is monitored and verified by independent inspectors
- The production chain must be sustainable
- Using packaging made from recycled or forest management-certified materials
Organic cotton certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is softer and often more durable compared to regular cotton. Besides being crafted with greater care and attention, the fabric itself is often stronger. The reason behind this is that the chemicals added during the harvest and processing of conventionally produced cotton can cause harm to the cotton fibres.

The Organic Company has a passion for stylish home textiles and sustainable living
For founder Joy Vasiljev, the key when launching The Organic Company in 2007 was to ensure that sustainability always makes business sense. As a pioneering brand, Joy had to demonstrate that an ethical enterprise can meet high standards in terms of sustainability without compromising functionality, quality or aesthetics.
The Organic Company made sustainability its benchmark while at the same time creating luxurious, visually pleasing and durable home textiles using the highest quality organic cotton. The company’s driving force remains unchanged — to develop top-notch products with minimal environmental impact yet with a strong focus on style and quality.

Durability is a core priority in the design and manufacturing of every product. By creating products of high quality, The Organic Company wants to encourage a “less waste, conscious consumption” mindset where customers buy fewer products and use them more and for a longer period of time.
The company now has a wide selection of environmental-friendly organic cotton textile products for the bath, kitchen, travel and meditation. The company designs its products in-house and, from time to time, collaborates with selected Danish designers.
Today, Joy Vasiljev is a key player in the sustainable lifestyle debate. She stresses that responsible business practices — committed to sustainability, social impact, and environmental friendliness — are crucial for real change to occur.
