Your host: Masterchef Massimo Bottura

Massimo Bottura embodies the role of chef, storyteller, and artist, weaving narratives into his dishes by breaking traditions and innovating with ingredients. His passion for Modena and Italy and his unstinting search for quality and excellence are on display in everything he does.

Chef Massimo Bottura is, without a doubt, one of the foremost ambassadors of modern Italian cuisine. From his first trattoria — Trattoria del Campazzo — on the outskirts of Modena in 1986, where he worked with ‘rezdora’ Lidia Cristoni, who shared the art of authentic pasta-making, to an apprenticeship under Chef Georges Coigny. Here, Bottura formed a culinary foundation that combined regional Italian cooking and classical French training. He further refined his style under legendary Alain Ducasse at Le Louis XV in Monte Carlo.

In 1995, Bottura opened his Osteria Francescana in Modena’s historic centre, where he blended his creative take on Italian cuisine with cutting-edge contemporary art and design, bringing a modern aesthetic to the junction of tradition and innovation. Another formative experience – this time under legendary Ferran Adrià – encouraged Bottura to continue pushing the boundaries in his cuisine. Over the last ten years, Bottura has worked to do just that, creating dishes such as “Five Ages of Parmigiano Reggiano in different textures and temperatures” that showcase his maturity as an innovator, as well as his respect for his ingredients.

Three Michelin stars and a first-place ranking in San Pellegrino’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants list cement Bottura’s status as one of the world’s foremost visionary chefs. His style of cooking is harmonious and genuine, in tune with the seasons and the land and well-balanced between tradition and modernity that does not follow trends but only itself. The dishes are full of finesse, with a strong identity, inviting and evoking contemplation of history, territory, and flavour.

Culinary inspirations: Exploring Emilia-Romagna, Italy’s land of slow food and fast cars

For food lovers, the Emilia-Romagna region is a gourmet’s paradise. It is the gastronomically richest region in what, for many, is the world’s best food country. This lush and fertile region is considered the epicentre of Italian cuisine. The list of treasured foods the region produces forms the backbone of much of what we think of as Italian cooking – Parmigiano Reggiano, balsamic vinegar, sparkling red Lambrusco wine, prosciutto, porcini and other mushrooms, and well-known pasta like lasagne, tagliatelle and tortellini.

Emilia-Romagna, the Land of Motors, is known as “Motor Valley”, a playground for racing and motor enthusiasts. It is the region with the world’s highest concentration of car and motorcycle luxury brands. There are just so many places that nurture this passion for motors in the area. From the famous racetracks of Imola and Misano to the factories of famous race car and motorbike brands, such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Dallara, Ducati, to the museum and collections, such as the museum dedicated to “Sic”, Marco Simoncelli, right up to minimoto, go-kart and motocross tracks.

Casa Maria Luigia, an exquisite 18th-Century country house nestled in the hills of Emilia-Romagna

Your stay: A glorious country house where you will enjoy art, culture, the Emilia Romagna region and foremost, the stunning cuisine

Your stay will be at Casa Maria Luigia, an exquisite 18th-Century country house nestled in the hills of Emilia-Romagna and surrounded by the agricultural landscape of the countryside of Modena. Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore, partners in life and business, acquired the property with the intention of extending the art of hospitality beyond the doors of Osteria Francescana, and where they can share their passion for art, music and food in a new form, from the heart of Emilia-Romagna.
