A wine estate of supreme aesthetic beauty

Winemaking, architecture and nature come together to form an epicurean escape at Valke Vleug, a spectacular wine estate in Belgium. In the middle of the beautiful rural area of the Flanders, old asparagus fields made place for the Valke Vleug Winery, covering a vineyard of 17,000 vines. All backdropped by incredible pastoral views and the sweeping greenery of the countryside. Thanks to the masterful winery architecture, Valke Vleug is as much a work of art as it is a cutting-edge wine estate, defined by striking aesthetics and natural beauty.

Brilliantly conceived and handsomely executed, Valke Vleug Winery is the vision of two people – entrepreneur and owner Jan Van Lancker and highly acclaimed architect Vincent Van Duysen. Beyond its pristine setting, it is the architectural mastery and the elegant design that steal the show. A flawless example of sleek modern design, this exceptional winery merges strict geometric forms, clean lines, sober volumes and ultra-stylish interior spaces to deliver an estate of unparalleled beauty and spatial calmness. The simplicity and purity of the design evoke contemporary elegance and sophisticated comfort at its best.

The carefully selected materiality reinforces the modern aesthetic of the wine estate and in a way that makes the design timeless in its appeal. Extensive use of materials in their raw form, colours and textures, displays both boldness and reverence for fine materials. This palette of concrete, lava stone and dark wood and steel is tempered by the surroundings – the green of the poplars and willow trees and the symmetrical rows of vines. Generous glazing and openings accentuate the effortless ambience and modern fluidity of the space, bathing the interiors in natural light, ventilation and glorious vistas. As a constant companion, the soothing views – spanning over the vineyards, providing misty landscapes, sunrises, sunsets and unspoilt natural beauty – ensure a tranquil existence.

The environment’s uncontaminated beauty is respected throughout, and the design approach makes clear references to the form of traditional Flemish farmsteads. Vincent Van Duysen embedded the project in the existing open landscape whilst paying tribute to the old local agricultural building typology but in a contemporary way. The buildings are arranged in four wings around a central courtyard, establishing a visual dialogue between indoors and outdoors. Set against the flat landscape, the winery architecture commands a demure yet bold and significant presence.

The main building, a long horizontal barn with a cantilevering gable roof, stretches out beyond an entrance courtyard. Half of the barn is occupied by wine production, while the other half is dedicated to pleasure, with expansive indoor and outdoor spaces for tasting and enjoying wine and food. There are also outbuildings for agricultural equipment and a dwelling with a roof terrace. Serene, peaceful and balanced, the understated yet elegant interiors incorporate a calm and neutral or earthy colour palette, straight lines, carefully curated furnishings including unique handmade wooden ones, beautiful abstract art and minimal accessories.

Jan Van Lancker partnered with Pieter Raeymaekers, a well-travelled winemaker, and Johan Stoffels, an experienced wine merchant, to launch Vinetiq, part winemaker, part a wine boutique specialising in cool-climate wines. Cool-climate wines have a very balanced nature characterised by their lighter body and lower alcohol content compared to the wines typical of warmer climates. Cool-climate wines are gaining in popularity and are already appreciated by top sommeliers and chefs around the world.

Valke Vleug’s working winery is made up of approximately 4.5 hectares of land, with a vineyard potentially producing 20,000 bottles of wine per year (expected by 2022). It produces high-quality cool-climate wines which are rich, complex and lovingly crafted. Recognising the unique terroir expression of the wine produced here, the result is refined and amazing character wines.

Valke Vleug grows nine different varieties of red and white grapes, including Chardonnay, Pinot Auxerrois, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gamay, Cabernet Dorsa and Acolon. Most of the wines are aged in the winery and cellars in stainless steel tanks and a smaller volume in oak or acacia wood barrels.

Since Valke Vleug opened in 2020, this remarkable wine estate has been looking to establish itself as a landmark of modern architecture, a place of pilgrimage for wine lovers, and a symbol of Belgium’s cool-climate wines.
